Esholt Outfall Sewer, Bradford

The Frizinghall treatment works built in 1862 rapdily became overloaded

As a result in 1906 the council purchased the Esholt Estate for over £239,000 and constructed a much bigger and more modern treatment works to cope with the capacity

A 4,807 yard long, 10ft wide tunnel was opened in 1923 to divert the sewage from Frizinghall to Esholt, before the works at Frizinghall finally closed in 1926

Along the way can be found 3 shafts/breathers between Wrose & Thackley

Myself and Squirrell had previously attempted to access this system once before with no luck

One lid wouldn't budge the only one we did manage to find had the most ridiculous flow I have ever seen and was a definate no go

THIS

The nearest we got that night was Squirrell sending down a wind-up shark instead
:D

A few months had passed and we decided to hit up the City again in search of more stuff...

Once under the streets, there was a set of ladders and 2 long staircases down a good 3 storeys to the deep level sewer below

At the bottom we had a short walk before we reached the fresh

Double WIN here as we were now below one of the main shafts that ventilate the outfall sewer

The brickwork in the main chamber was without fault, despite being over 80 yrs old!

Here - The sewer flows from left to right as it passes us by
