Tower Coilliery is a bit of a success story in the final dark days of the South Wales coal industry. A management/workers buyout in 1994 stopped the plan closure by the Government/British coal and the site went on work for a further 14 years before all seams were completely exhausted. Some of the buildings have been demo'd but a lot of the site remains almost as if it's still in use - the workers still look after the site and if you bump into them they'll not kick you off the site but happily tell you about the history. They are proud of what they did - some of the nicest people you will ever meet too.

They have just started open cast mining on the washery part of the site now, creating another new chapter in the history of the site.. creating 250 jobs in a part of Wales that really is fucked employment wise. When you look around south Wales you see lots of little open cast mines working away once more. Maybe they shouldn't have capped all those shafts all those years ago...
