THE DONCASTER GRAND THEATER

IMG_1324copy.jpg

This place is quite good and has fantastic parking as you pretty much park on the roof it. I dont know who first did it but I think I first saw Speed's report of it, bloody lovely. It sits wierdly, almost inside a big shopping centre and it also has car park on top of it. Turns out they tried to knock it down when they wanted to build the said shopping centre and car park but 60000 signitures saved it so they kind of build round it.

Bit of history....

The 'ye Olde Grand was opened in 1899 first as a Circus Hall and then became the home of the Salvation Army, it was used for Political Speakers and eventually it was bought and turned into a theatre by a Mr J W Chapman, who at that time was the owner of another old theatre which stood next to Doncaster town hall. It was designed by J P Briggs and was built by a local firm of builders called Arnold and Sons. It was one of the first theatres in the country to have electric lights and also a sprinkler system installed by some clever lads from Leeds. All staircases in the building are in stone as stone doesnt catch fire easily.....

The future for it looks glum, the people who are trying to save cant seem to get in contact with the unknown man who owns it, apartly he is aware of people wanting to open it up again and doesnt want them to worry cos he is doing a fine job keeping it secure till recent.

WELCOME TO THE GRAND.......

Charlie Chaplin, Sandy Powell, Nellie Wallace, Albert Modley, Max Miller, Julie Andrews, Wilfred Pickles, Norman Evans and Morecambe & Wise to name but a few. Julie Andrews’ mother and father, Ted and Barbara Andrews appeared in Pantomime in December 1935, Julie was born in October 1935 and she was carried onto the stage as a baby and then appeared there again when she was 16 years old!!!
