They are looking to have a go at a form of fracking after it closes (not really fracking as they are just going to investigate the laying of pipes down to the workings to suck up the methane there and sell it to some chancers)...

It's not the final nail in it's coffin, Hatfield was mothballed for years and re-opened. However I would be surprised if it ever does...

Not sure they actually got round to doing it at Tower - AFAIK and can make out, both down and upcasts are blocked but not filled. The headgear is still there so I doubt they are extracting methane from the pit. They seem to be concentrating more on the opencast effort across the road at Tower now (and causing traffic hell at the Rhigos roundabout) but Mines Rescue still meet at the pit. Tower always had a methane generating plant though even when it was operational which used to de-gas the districts so maybe this hasn't been mothballed but is still working ?

Some start up type energy company have stuck a generator on the old Garw colliery near Pontycymmer (don't know if it is actually running yet) but the idea was to tap the CH4 from the old workings to run the generator. There are actually loads of Abandoned Mine Methane Access Agreements around here just waiting for the agreement holders to get going and do something. St. Johns is another one which is supposed to ooze CH4.

Maltby could well end up like Wheldale. They have been capturing methane from the shafts there since the late 90's - even though it closed in 1987, the shafts were never filled in. Mind you, will take a hell of a lot of hardcore, builders rubble, old cars, assorted shite to fill the shafts at Maltby. One is nearly 2 miles deep and the other nearly 3 miles deep. Probably less expensive to extract the gas than fill them in...

Towers methane generators were leased i believe. We were on site during stopping and capping operations and the generators and methane plant had been removed a week or two previously. I don't believe there were any plans to reinstate them.

More than likely right there Dave.

Didn't know the generators were leased and gone but nothing in the way of what is currently happening there would suggest that they are planning on restarting or even go straight from the shafts...
