I took a trip to Epsom in Surrey last week to visit (what's left of...) the legendary West Park asylum, although most of the buildings have been demolished or rebuilt I still had a fun day out as the size of this place is mindblowing. The place was opened as West Park Mental Hospital in 1923 seving the psychiatric needs of over 2000 patients from mixed class backgrounds, concidered to be the last great London mental hospital. It went into decline in the mid 90s and was completely derelict by 2003, in recent years the majority of the original buildings have been demolished and very little is left behind of what once was.

The manor house was once a beautiful building but is now a complete mess inside and out, practically all of the first floor has collapsed but you can still explore a few rooms if you don't mind climbing over debris. There are a few interesting bits including a lone segway left outside on the grass and a shed full of 'hospital waste incineration only bags'.

The water tower is the most prominent structure left on the whole site, I managed to get inside and went up to the top. To be honest there wasn't much to see in there apart from some fire extinguishers, pigeon shit covered stairs, and a nice view from the top but it was still good to make it up there.

The social club wasn't even on my radar but it was quite an amusing place. Two snooker tables with remnants of broken trophies on the cloth, a 'just married' sign on the floor and empty pint glasses on the tables.

Last but not least was the mortuary, I'm not sure if my photos will offer up anything more than what's already been posted on here but it's definitely a good place to tick off the list if you like freaky stuff. I was amazed that the decomposing rat is still there on the desk and I found a few of the remaining 'brain blocks' (wtf?). Blood slides with dates going back to the 50s are equally as creepy and the body storage cabinets are well, body storage cabinets.

Here's the photos, there are quite a few so apologies if there are too many.

Outstanding photo record of dereliction x so nostalgic to see the demise of a place where I worked as an estates surveyor during the 70 s snd 80 s x the mortuary upgrade was my doing as were numerous ward upgrades x the sense of fellowship at west park was unlike any other experience in my lifetime x never let it be said that asylums were dark satanic places x bless you for preserving such wonderful memories x westyparker
