So I came across this place in a report a few weeks back and seeing as it was a short detour from my route up to Glasgow I thought it might be worth a look with a friend. We parked the car and set off to find a fantastic explore!

A lot of people as far back as 2009 have been afraid to go upstairs because of the rotten floorboards, but that didn't deter us! we crossed all sorts of holes and creaking stair cases all the way up to the roof and attics!

here is a bit of history:

Eastend House is a Georgian country house built around the nucleus of a simple square keep built in the 1500s. The tall crowstep-gabled wings to the east and west were added in 1673 and the bow-fronted elevation to the south was added in the 18th century and completely encases the original keep on that side. The Scottish Baronial additions by David Bryce to the west date to 1851 and as a result the original keep is now only visible along its north front and a little of to the east. the keep is constructed of coursed and harled rubble and rises through 3 storeys to a crenellated parapet borne on corbels and a gabled garret storey sits above. The first floor string course continues along the 17th century wing to the east.

17. this is my favourite piece of history on the house! on the very top of the roof a is a lead ornamental ball on which is graffiti dating back to 1910 as fas as we could see. Notable names are Slater Lanark in 1910 and Quinn Lanark in 1944 as well as more through to 2014.

Just a word or warning, the main staircase is very unstable, the whole thing moved about 2 inches with a large crunch when my friend was on it so the other stone stair cases are a safer option!

Thanks for looking!

over and out,

This is the place I never got round to when I was up there a few months back... really nicely covered, I'll have to try and get back up there and pay a visit :thumb

If you want to see a really dodgy floor though, try the towers at Hartwood Hospital. These look positively solid in comparison!

I've done Hartwood and got on the roof This is generally better but worse in some places.. the thing is it looks solid but dry rot means your feet just go straight through in places!

I'm very jealous! I really wanted a shot through the clock face. We stood and looked at the floor for ages before deciding it just wasn't worth the risk :(

Nice ones :thumb

Good pics:)

Looks a good mooch unless you weigh more than a small child :)
Certainly looks like a Scottish visit is due sometime soon. Whether we"ll need Visas by then is another question :D

Well done to you for not wimping out and taking the plunge up those dreaded stairs! It looks in such bad condition now, but I guess this is what happens...

As for climbing those final stairs at hartwood, did you have a deathwish? I sat my bag on it and seen the stairs drop about 2/3cm, every single floor beam is rotten underneath it, with some not even attached to the wall, and the 20ft drop (and probably another 20ft once you fell through that floor as well) made me think twice...

Absolutely cracking pics, thanks for sharing! :thumb

Yes! That's exactly why I didn't cross it. Sometimes you have to admit defeat...

Now, all we need is for somebody to take a sturdy plank up to bridge the gap and we can all go and finish the job off :D

Hah, it makes me feel a lot better knowing someone else faced the same problem as me ;)

I did think of that! I went downstairs looking for a 'sturdy' plank like you say, but all I could find was rotten wood... if I seen someone else attempt it I would probably give it a go, but until that day, you may address me as chicken :D

You don't stand on the boards is the trick! get the the very edge of the concrete stairwell and take one large (but ginger) step almost onto the next stairs and pray they don't give! still It will have deteriorated over the last since my visit. The Scottish weather doesn't do wonders for old floorboards!

great report. Sad to see such a nice building left to rot, that would make an awesome restoration project if you had the right money and patience
