RAF Daws Hill - Comms Tower

The Communications Tower at RAF Daws Hill was one of many such towers in Europe, these were erected as part of the Digital European Backbone Network (DEB) which was part of a defence communications project for the USAF. This particular tower was built in 1978. Originally installed in the 1970s and 1980s, the DEB Network ran from the United Kingdom down to Northern Italy.

Communications from EUCOM War Headquarters at RAF Daws Hill could be forwarded via the USAF Microwave Relay station at Christmas Common to the F-111 base at RAF Upper Heyford.

With the end of the Cold War the DEB Network became redundant, Microwave communications were replaced by fibre optic cable which have a much greater survivability capability since it is buried in the ground, it can transmit much more information than microwaves plus it doesn't require maintenance like microwave towers do.

Bit of a hurried explore this one, anyway on with the pics....
