It had been a while since The126 and I had been out so we thought we'd head over to the Hoo Peninsula and hit some sites.
after a long day the last place we wanted to see was Grain Tower Battery but....

That's the last time I leave looking at the tide table to someone else! :)

With some time to kill we headed over to whats left of Grain fort and found a way in. Built in 1860 and modified at the end of the 19th century and then through to WW2. It closed in 1956 and most of the site was demolished in 1961 leaving only a few tunnels but still worth a look.

The tide had now receded so we headed out to Grain Tower Battery. Built in 1855, an adaptation of a Martello Tower and designed to protect the River Medway and the sea front of Sheerness. As with the fort it was added to and updated to during the wars. The two things that stand out to me are the chains that run around the structure which are part of anti-submarine nets and the large concrete barracks standing on stilts.
