I have visited the G E C Alsthom site a few times now, and like other sites i have been back to, it amazed me how much stuff I missed the first time round! There is a maze of rooms, corridors, old office blocks, old engineering buildings and staircases to explore, though if you do go, take a friend or two as i have bumped into young reckless tearaways smashing stuff up and a crack head smoking up in one of the office blocks!!?? quite weird, though expected in this kind of place as its easily accessible. There is also a lot of graffiti tags, some of which are very well done.

It was an engineering site that opened in 1941 that engineered and tested the early jet engines. it was set up by Frank Whittle's company Power Jets ltd, some years after that it became the Atomic Power Division, creating the worlds first commercial scale nuclear reactor, then it turned to G E C Engineering Systems, mainly their mechanical engineering laboratories that went under the name Alsthom. very interesting place indeed. Enjoy.

The back end of the G E C site.

    Nicely done :thumb
they demolished the big function hall at the back last year, but surprisingly left this.
After encountering some unpleasant characters... you went back on your own at midnight??!

It's literally 5 minutes away from where I live so I have been a few times now, I saw the weirdos and young lads with strong Irish accents a few weeks after I took that long exposure. Won't be doing that again, I can promise you!

The big holes were for engine testing. I think they would put the engines at the top and test the emissions and stuff further down. Off the top of my head they are both about 40 ft deep and have extractor fans in at different levels. Think they made a pioneering engine here but tbh can't remember any of the details.
