    I'll start with the usual...

    History

George Barnsley and Sons Ltd. (founded 1836) They were in Cornish Place on the Don and specialised in forge filing and cutting tools for leather workers and shoe makers. One George Barnsley was Master Cutler in 1883.:

George Barnsley and Son is listed in the 1837 Sheffield directory as a file manufacture situated on Wheeldon Street, The 1849 listing records a move to Cornhill and the 1852 to Cornesh works Cornesh street they had by this time also increased there product range to include steel files, shoe and butchers knives.

They are again listed in 1944 as manufactures of files and blades shoe knives and leather workers tools.

In the 1948 listing the business had become George Barnsley and Son Ltd

    Report

George Barnsley's is a place that I've wanted to visit with the guys I explore with for quite a while now. We've scoped it out almost every weekend looking for a way in. Every time we've spotted something, as soon as we arranged to meet and got there, it had been sealed. One of our friends had been before but the entry point that he had used has been bricked up for years now.

We'd ended up in the BMW place next door as well as an old bodyshop even on the morning of this explore! After being disappointed so many times we'd decided on one final way in which a tip-off confirmed. Finally, we were in! After meeting someone else inside, we also ended up with a much easier way out! Thanks!

Spent a good few hours here, so nice to see somewhere that hasn't been trashed.

The wide one? Top centre of the photo? Looks like it on there! First time I've ever been so wouldn't know what it was like before, a friend of mine who came went about 5 years ago, but he didn't mention anything changed in there. Definitely one of my favourite places now!

More pictures on my Flickr, can zoom in and see. Some aren't great as I put the tripod away towards the end and just went aperture priority. Wish I'd kept it out now!

I was on about the large pulley wheel and belt. It is Ok, it is out is out of shot. I stand corrected, lol. Also, the picture immediatley above. I swear that piece of machinery was attached to the ceiling just earlier this month. I have heard rumours that Barnsley has been vandalised recently.

    Cheers.

Looks bolted to the floor I'd say, but yes it has deteriorated significantly.

Yep, can see the bolts going into the floor on the photo. One of the few rooms I just went in snapped a photo and moved on, wish I'd had a closer look now!

Thanks! One place I've loved looking at reports of. Really happy to have been finally! Pleased with my photos too, only have a 50mm and a 10-20mm so just make use of those however I can!

I hate that Typhoo box with the teapot next to it. If there was ever a location that required absolutely no setting up it was Barnsley's

Good to see it is still clinging on. Don't forget about the saw tooth roofed buildings out back, some very rare machinery in there and it often gets overlooked.

I love that Typhoo box and teapot it's one of my favourite little quirky bits ha, i'm surprised about the condition of that teapot though it looks practically brand new, excluding the design!
