Nothing much has changed since then but as the 1930's are my favourite architectural period I decided to check out whether it was still doable.

Fernilee was the first of the two reservoirs in the Goyt Valley. It was constructed in 1938 by Stockport Water Corporation, now part of North West Water, and cost £480,000. When full, the reservoir holds 4,900 million litres of water which supplies drinking water to Stockport and the surrounding towns.

The water treatment works below the dam were constructed using stone from the demolished Errwood Hall.

Unfortunately my battery died before I could get a snap of the exterior but the high arched ceilings and windows show off the shapes of the art deco period just as well.

The building is due for demolition this month so you will have to be quick if you fancy a look but be prepared to get creative for access. Also be aware that the Park Ranger has a base next door.

The testing gear was in the basement but it was pitch dark and I was without torch on this occasion. It would be interesting to see if anyone could make it in with some decent light and see what's down there.

Process of deduction! That's the only reservoir in the area built in 1938. Yeah mate, very sketchy ha ha.

I'd be quick mate as there's notice in for demolition at the mo. It's a shame as its a lovely building architecuraly. The works at nearby Chesterfield which featured on Grand Designs is an example of the potential that could be achieved.
