After spending the morning with too much light we started onto the list of sites we had, the first of which was this one...

Not much left and not much changed - nice light on our visit though, but an interesting ambient structure...

    History>

Railway Warehouse built for the Great Northern Railway at their Friar Gate Station 1877-78 by Kirk & Randall of Sleaford. Red brick and Welsh slate and glazed roofs with three brick stacks to east. Unusual plan of rectangular warehouse with triangular office block with a mezzanine floor to the east. Two and three storeys, over a basement.

    going forward >

But owner Clowes Developments hopes its plan to build a supermarket as large as Asda's Spondon store, together with 150 homes, offices, cafés and a number of smaller shops will finally breathe life back into the 20-acre plot.

Andrew Bock, director at Clowes Developments, said: "If we don't get this project off the ground then the Friar Gate Goods Yard site could be facing another 50 years of dereliction."

Clowes's vision is to spend £10 million restoring the yard's engine shed and bonded warehouse, which was built by the Great Northern Railway in 1878. It would convert the ground floor of the warehouse into a small shopping mall and the supermarket's restaurant.

The rest of the three-storey building would be taken up with a supermarket sales floor for non-food items, storage and office space.

The food section of the supermarket would be built on stilts to the side with an impressive glass walkway joining it to the first floor of the warehouse.

Underneath the supermarket there would be space for 700 car parking spaces.

I spend quite a lot of time in Derby and previously checked out all of the buildings on your list. There is another building next to the Great Northern Railway which got set on fire. From what I was told, Kingsway Hospital has part closed and only some of the building remains open. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of derelict places in Derby.

This looks like it would've been a lovely building once. Railway stuff always has a great mix of practicality and elegance.

How the hell did that car end up vertical in an archway?

You need to get in the basements, roadway and workshops underneath this place.
