Hatfield Heath POW camp 116 May 2014

    Visited with my partner (non-member)

Prisoner of War Camp 116 was set up in 1941 to house Italian prisoners of war, and from 1943-1944 it mainly held German and Austrian prisoners.

The History I have found for this site only really states that it was an open working camp, where local farm girls would come pick up pow`s and utilize them on the farm for the day then return once finished the day’s work. It is a Standard type of camp as identified by the International Red Cross in 1945. A small section is now an egg packing factory (probably what the pow`s did). There has been a lot of site clearing and a manageable perimeter fence put up, local rumour is that it’s for houses being built in the next few months on the site.

I will let the pictures do the talking from here on.

I hope you all enjoyed my first published report, I never usually bother with reports but I’m going to get my ass in gear and start producing them from now on.

A lot has changed since then it seems, a new gate has been put in place, all nettles have gone and the sacks in one of the huts have been removed. I wonder what is happening here. I hope it isn't houses, Hatfield Heath is a pretty small village and I think a lot of people like it that way! (Including me). Love the report and pics! Keep it up!

Hey thanks. When I was there the locals said it was going to become houses. I need to pop over there and have another look around soon.

Yeah it's a good site, I've been there a few times, did you ever get a view from the top of the water tower? That's priceless.
