Hi. I have been a lurker on this site for years and thought it was about time I registered.

I have lived in Gloucester for 15 years and have recently rekindled my love of visiting empty and derelict buildings and not just looking at pictures of them. I also love finding follies, grottoes, caves (but not caving/pot holing), ice houses, cold war bunkers etc.
I can trace these interests back to my childhood playing in the street and daring each other (I didn't need much persuasion) to go inside a derelict building in a street in West London we called 'The Dairy'. The bigger kids said it was haunted. I progressed to visiting an empty flat but got caught and grounded for a week. Then a huge derelict house in the park (it burned down) and a regular hangout during my early teens was the overgrown Highgate Cemetery when you could get into family vaults, see coffins, get into the catacombs and into a derelict chapel.
As a very small child I was taken to places such as the tiny shell covered chapel on Guernsey and the Hell Fire Caves at West Wycombe..... Enough before I bore you.

Thank you for the fantastic reports with stunning photography I have been enjoying on here for years. I have managed to visit a number of places after seeing reports about them. I had forgotten what fun it was.....

Hi, Cheltenham here. I'm always happy to meet locals, so if you've got any leads let me know and we can exchange recipe notes.

Welcome aboard :thumb The west country has lots to offer although a lot of it is underground.

Thank you all for the welcome. :thumb

I would love to meet up with experienced locals to go exploring with. Most places would be reckless to visit on my own. I have been in some long barrows, saw a cave spider in Hetty Pegler's Tump. They are a bit bigger than house spiders!
I did Lower Balls Green mine and Upper Balls Green mine. That is about as far underground as I have dared go. Upper balls green is a death trap. I did one of the 2 a year guided tours of Lower Balls Green mine a couple of years ago. I think the landowner is approachable and lets people in there if you ask nicely during the summer when the bats aren't hibernating. It would be good to find some people to do that one with. The calcite formations in there are amazing and I want to take a UV torch there to see it glow.
I found a small cave at Birdlip which is supposed to be the entrance to a couple of stone mine tunnels but it would be a serious caving job to get in and that is beyond me.

I was taken to Little Rissington a few months back and we got into the officers mess and another building. Fantastic place. The best peeling paint corridors I have seen.

I live 5 mins away from lower balls, Stay away from upper balls as the moment as the GSS are in talks with the owner to open it back up again. Happy to show you lower and maybe some slightly bigger ones if you like the mine thing.

Also Upper may be a deathtrap but its a bloody gorgeous mine and has one of the best examples of a crane I've ever seen outside Box. Personally I cant wait to get back in there. If you do a search I have a report up for both.

I had a look at your mine reports. Very nice reports. I love the calcite in upper, it would be good to see that one day.
Thanks for the offer to show me lower and some others. That would be fantastic.

Do you know the mine entrance at Birdlip? It's not very exciting but is very local to me. It is only a small room size cave but if you are into crawling through very tiny tunnels there is meant to be more to it. I have a few (poor) photos of it. I found an old bottle dump nearby too which I found interesting.
Another one on my doorstep is the Horsbere Brook culvert under the M5. Not worth traveling far to but it makes a local walk more interesting.

Thanks but I couldnt take a decent picture for love nor money when I did those! Yes, heard of the birdlip cave, I think theres only a small chamber after the crawl once you get inside the main cave IIRC. If you aren't aware of it check out the mcra database online as it has details on most of the underground stuff in the area.

If you want to do Lower Balls PM me some dates and we're work something out. I'll also give you my facebook details as well.

My reference says there is only 35m acessable at Birdlip so it is small.

I would like to do Lower Balls but I don't think I can PM you yet because I am too new on here.

Have a word with a Mod they may be able to enable PM's for you early. In the meantime I'll PM you and see if that works.
