A solo visit to this one, on a nice sunny Winter day.

Hemerdon Ball Mine was opened in 1917 as part of a program to take advantage of a large deposit of Tungsten-Tin ore.
It was an open-cast mine, which has left terrible scars on the landscape - which can still be seen today.

Production ran on and off until 1944, due to a variety of set-backs and government restrictions. At this point, the supply of Tungsten Ore from overseas sources was resumed and the Mine closed.

In the 1960s, 70s and 80s, further exploration into the use of the open cast mine to excavate ore took place. With the leases of the land being transfered to Hemerdon Mining and Smelting Ltd. A review of operations in 1999 concluded that with the falling prices of Tungsten Tin, work should be ceased at Hemerdon.

There have since been samples taken, and Wolf Minerals plan to re-commence mining operations at Hemerdon Ball in the near future.
