Hic Bibi Culvert, Coppull - October 2014

Visited with Kenni and Snake Oil

    History

Hic Bibi Culvert taking Hic Bibi Brook under the mainline between Standish & Copull.
It is said to be where Oliver Cromwell refreshed himself when advancing south after the battle of Preston in 1648. A stone inscribed "Hic Bibi" ("Here I Drink") marks the site.

    The Visit

A chap in work knows what i get up to in my spare time and brought me in a "Local Life" leaflet where some photos had been taken at this culvert. After many discussions as to the location of it we decided to all make headway and set out in search of it. After a 20 minute walk through a derelict garden centre and through a nature reserve we soon found the said culvert, but also soon found the other end. Unfortunately it is just a culvert under a railway line so maybe 100m long tops, but it had a nice feature of the old stonework and with the history it turned out to be a simple stroll....

    On with the photos...

As I think everyone's said so far, nice arches! You've captured them really well. The interesting bit of history compliments your report too.
