the next site of the day...

    History>

In 1931 Hickson & Welch Ltd was founded, from the site that had been destroyed in 1930.

From 1944 the company made DDT, becoming the UK's largest manufacturer.

Hickson and Welch (Holdings) Ltd was incorporated on 28 September 1951. It made dyestuffs, DDT (pesticide), and timber preservatives. It had the subsidiaries Hickson & Welch Ltd, and Hickson's Timber Impregnation Co. (G.B.) Ltd. The timber subsidiary had been founded on 25 October 1946. The timber preservative contained dinitrophenol, and was marketed as Triolith, Tanalith and Pyrolith. Pyrolith contained a flame-proofing agent.

In August 2000 Hickson International plc was bought by Arch Chemicals. At the time Hickson employed over 1,300 people, had assets of £73 million, and a revenue of £208 million.

It became known as C6 Solutions and closed in July 2005. The power station still remains. To the east was Wheldale Colliery, and opposite the site is The Jungle rugby league ground; Castleford is synonymous with rugby league.

    > The day was filled with a terrain scramble, comedy, some retro stuff, and a feast of mechanical ruin...

*most of the photos were taken on second camera for this one, and soz no vid...

    "Terrain scramble" -

    >we took a long and safer route, following the observation of 3 vans, and warning of potential police dog training known to often occur on the day of the visit, along the way was this railway bridge that we forgot to explore on the way back... but the journey was filled with brambles, fences and scrambling over rubble and nearly falling in a river...

    hang on, fire station? >

Inside here is a fire engine, we couldn't believe it!! I thought it would be a good idea to get a photo inside the truck with a respirator on my snout, great idea until something popped and the loudest hissing noise proceeded to occur. We panicked a bit, but managed to go back and get some photos except a random guy wandered past, looked at us and carried on - it was classic gold. We saw the same guy later while exploring the office block, which then prompted continuos patrols by the site foreman presumably, well whoever he was he was certainly looking for us, which added a bit of pressure... ;-)

so comedy moment over, and still having not gotten the photos of the damn ghost engine, we moved on...

The Railway Viaducts a death trap, you probably noticed it has a metal track bed mostly rusted through to nothing. Many a Metal Fairy etc has been through it . Very daunting in the dark when your over the River :(

I"ve been there many times years ago when it was in full swing, working on the canal side when the sirens have gone off & Fire Engines everywhere. Something i"ll always remember as a week or so after the explosion happened which killed those poor workers in the Portakabin :(
