Report number six and my fourth exclusive! This UE drug is getting addictive...Found following a hunch road trip last week with the girlfriend and re-visited with clebby.
This stunning manor house was built in 1846 on the same site as a previous Victorian manor which burnt down on the 14th March four years earlier. The site remained dormant until the owners could afford the rebuild cost of £10,000. At the same time they extended the west wing adding a ballroom.
It was then sold, still as a private house, in 1849 to the brilliantly named Colonel Napier Mills. It remained in the family until around 1936 when it was leased to Misses Zoo and Mrs Hilary Hunt who set up a private school providing nursery education for both boarders and day release pupils. It closed in 1945,being sold to a local society and like a lot of these places was used by evacuees during the war.In 1947 it was re-named and became a school for the handicapped, girls only at first, then mixed. At the same time some rather unsympathetic extensions and ideas were put into place, stables converted, clasrooms added, new buildings erected etc.
With dwindling numbers and changing care laws squeezing the business dry it eventually folded.
The 26 pupils had their last lesson together in 2007.

    Imposing looks,lovely gables,decorative chimneys,mullioned windows,coach house,servants wings,stables,lodge...

Sold for £2m to a property developer work is finally underway turning the property into three separate residences.Several of his previous ideas (like new flats) have met stiff resistance-In 2010 Planning Officer Tracy Smith noted "shows an unsympathetic approach...extremely harmful alterations-permenant loss of historic floorplans and landscape." Goodgirl. Locals wrote letters of objection and a petition helped do the trick.

    Back into the servants quarters
