    Return to Big K - Headstock Tour - January 2016

    In part one of my Kellingley Report we took a look around the Bath House and Lamp Room, before moving on to a quick teaser showing the bottom of No.1 Tower. In this report we'll be taking a detailed look at the inner workings of No.1 & No.2 towers.

    No.1 Tower:

    No.1 Tower was in control of the movement of men and equipment from surface level to the shaft bottom. It's this tower that we can access and begin our tour from. The above picture taken from the connecting corridor between No.1 Tower and the Lamp Room.

    Relay Stations can be seen at either sides of the lifts in the above photo (Blue Huts) in the below picture we take a look inside them. These huts would relay information to the men manning the East and West Winders up the top of the Headstock.

    It all looks nice and tidy inside compared to the quagmire we were in outside.....although it was AFAF even with a migraine from hell ;)

    Best take some Doggy Treats next time I think :eek: and my waders . If only we could have videoed it ;)

    No salvaging took place at Big K - what was underground at the end of the shift stays underground.
    Not economically viable to salvage the infrastructure or equipment. Uk coal can't even afford the demolition costs for the surface buildings.

    They're currently drilling the shaft pockets to hold the steelwork which becomes the form work for the concrete cap - this involves chopping all the services and circuits that would intrude through the cap. Hence the cable off cuts.

    Lovely pictures from the winder cabin. I regret not getting my 50mm out more at collieries!

    Is it me or have they removed the coal off those conveyors? Or are you actually inside the airlocks there? Fans still on?

    There are no conveyors inside the airlock. Skips discharge via bunkers to those conveyors outside the airlock. Not been coal on them since last year.

    Ahh i thought it might be, there was some coal on them outside.. Was going to take a jar and fill it up next visit. haha

    Thanks for the correction Dave, presumed they would have been retrieving copper wiring etc.

    Cheers mate, always worth having a prime lens on you I find!

    And as Dave has said, taken on the outside of the airlock, I didn't want to mess about with the airlock doors not knowing what was going on on the other side of them!
