Another guy from work, originally from leeds mentioned a tunnel under leads from the war times.

They used to build tanks and drive them through this 2 mile tunnel under leeds to the train tracks to ride them down ready to go across the channel?

Anyone else ever heard of this?

Don't know...beats me why they would build tanks in leeds though , miles away from Europe where the fighting was going on...

The Cross Gate area of Leeds was home to Vickers Defence Systems and tanks were built at this site. I remember the factory from the late 80's.

A Royal Ordnance Factory, ROF Leeds, was built at Barnbow, off Manston Lane, producing guns & ammunition for the army and navy. The building was bought by Vickers Defence Systems and produced the Challenger 2 tank before it closed in 2004

Didn't know that !! Still seems a bit of a pointless place to build them if you get my drift.

If you believe that then you will believe the gubbermint are about to mothball that collection of steam choo choo's they have been keeping in my backyard for the past 782 years.

Seriously though, you hear rumours like this all the time. Secret underground streets, tunnels, complexes and whatnot whose existence is or was known to "A friend of my uncle twice removed whose sister in laws daughter had a friend at school whose dads brother used to play in them when he was a kid". They never ever end up actually being true.

Leeds has lots of shelters, all of them under the parks (Hyde, Gotts etc) - they built enough to take 50% of the population underground during WW2.

Other than that the only other tunnel network I'd heard about is the ones under the university.

Bit more info on this today, it supposedly ran from Barnbow Munition underground to what is now leeds main train station, Its apparently built over the river and has an array of tunnels under the station, some for the rive and others for storage and apparently this, it was a way to get the tanks from the area to the trains without enemy planes spotting where they were being made. Underground to the main station, on the train and head down south on the main line undercovers.

Still seems very far fetched to me

Is it possible she has seen the dark arches and made up this other use for them?

Tunnels under the train station - Check

Some for the river - Check

    Other for storage - Check
