Probably as iconic a part of Liverpool’s recent history as the Liver birds themselves, Lewis's was a large department store in Liverpool city centre. It was formerly the flagship of a group of department stores under the Lewis's name that operated from 1856 to 1991. After being owned by the store group Owen Owen (1991–2007) it was bought by Vergo Retail Ltd. It was closed in 2010. The Lewis’s building is currently under renovation and will soon be refurbished into £37M worth of retail and leisure space. Those of you familiar with the Lewis’s name will know that while operating as a department store, the building’s fifth floor housed a shop floor which was last used in the 1980’s, leaving a time capsule from a bygone era right in the heart of the city.
With the bank holiday weekend in full swing the streets of Liverpool where flooded with revelers from the Matthew street festival, as well as the throngs of police and security such an event brings. Our entrance to the site seemed rather exposed given the amount of potential wandering eyes from all angles on street level. Fuck it, think invisible thoughts and give it a go….

This report is the combined photographical effort of myself and TheFlu24, hence the different watermarks.

Having claimed the rooftop we headed down into the building it’s self to search out the fabled fifth floor. Sadly around 95% of the floor space has been cleared to make way for offices, but a few hints of what the floor once contained still remain.

We took the time to check out the rest of the old department store and take in the remaining features. It’s sad that the future of this building lies in more apartments and cubicles for the 9-5 office drone.
