    Five years after Liverpool was awarded a year in the spotlight when it was named as a European Union Capital of Culture for 2008, the celebrations finally got under way last night in spectacular style.

    Twenty thousand people packed St George's Plateau in the city centre to witness a 40-minute performance that incorporated music, poetry, fireworks, men in high-visibility jackets and safety hats suspended from cranes, Ringo Starr singing and drumming on the roof of St George's Hall and the city's Lord Mayor emerging from a shipping container.

    Photos taken from the top of the old Forum Cinema on Lime St with a non UE friend. I can honestly say we had one of the best views of the event. Simply Awsome. The aim was purely the roof too see the event and not the cinema itself (although the cinema is a good explore nontheless). Anyway what else can i say, the pics say it all:
