Yeah, would need tens of millions investment to overcome the problems with no guarantee that it would pay off, plus they've already found an alternative source to service the contract they've got with Drax.

They made £30million last year, surely they should be reinvesting some of that?

Part if UK Coal's "shut a pit a year" programme. Now Welbeck is cleared it was always going to be Maltby or Harworth. Both will be gone in 5 years no doubt. I hear Daw Mill's fate is uncertain at the moment too...

Whats happening at Maltby is nothing to do with UK coal they have been owned and operated by hargreaves for the last 4 Years. I Hope they can find a solution to their current problems and remain open.

I gather they've had problems with oil, The bottom line is that its unlikely they'll decide to continue with the development of T125 Unless there a sound belief that the conditions will improve. Unfortunately as they're currently only running a single face (T15) and one in development (T125) it would mean a significant face gap if they were to give up on T125, With a pit costing millions of pounds a week to run it would be uneconomical to not be producing anything for the 8 months it would take to develop a differant panel, cheaper to close maltby and put the money into Tower, They believe they can cover there supply contract to Drax from other sources and have a import source of coal suitable to run monckton (cokeworks)

The following are quotes from the Hargreaves shareholder updates:

    And more recently:

It should be noted that even if they do decide to continue with T125 it will have a significantly shorter life than originally planned due to face length having been shortened by 1900mtrs, this will mean development work to the next face will have a much greater urgency if they're not to end up with a financially crippling face gap anyway.

Inevitable really but now its official:
I understand they've now had two incidents involving evacuation using Breathing Apparatus in the last few weeks and have already discounted the only other production methods that would have allowed some of T125 to be mined.

Once the pumps get turned off, you would think that most of the current workings will be underwater before long.

They do seem to be toying with the idea of glorified fracking though.
