Mapperley Tunnel was opened in 1876, closed in1960. The tunnel suffered throughout it's life from subsidence. There was a roof fall in it and the line was closed shortly afterwards. it is 1132 yards long, one end has been back filled, up to the air shaft, there is amazing pile of rubbish what has been thrown down the shaft. The tunnel is in very poor condition. Visited with my step father (He chickened out after about 100 yards :crazy ) His dog Busta and of course explorer dog Binky.
