Well this was certainly one for the record books! But we'll get to that in a bit...

    Some History
Originally dubbed The Brecon & Radnor Joint Counties Lunatic Asylum upon it's opening on March 19th, 1903, the hospital was the first large asylum in Southern Wales. Like many other asylums around the UK, it was built to be self sufficient with a private water source, electricity feed, heating and sewage. For the able-bodied patients; there were vast agricultural fields whom produced food for the hospital's patients. As well as residential wards, the hospital had a large recreation and dining hall, kitchens, workshops "in which the patients were encouraged to spend their time profitably. A tailor, bakery, shoe-maker and printing shops were all part of the complex as well as 8 acres of market gardens.

In 1948 the hospital became part of the NHS. NHS management brought a number of innovations, including art and occupational therapy and the integration of the sexes, who had previously occupied opposite sides of the hospital. The site also became home to the Mid and West Wales College of Nursing and Midwifery and the Powys Drugs & Alcohol Council for substance misuse. Other services included treatments for the elderly mentally ill, rehabilitation and continuing care, day care, reflexology, physiotherapy, electro-convulsive therapy (ECT); chiropody and psychiatry.

Again, another hospital to fall victim to Care in the Community which was introduced in the 1990's. By 1999 the final ward was closed and Mid Wales Hospital was no more. "The large derelict site has recently become an attraction to many urban explorers despite improved security measures."

Improved security measures? Yeah - rite.

    The Explore

Another joint explore with Jed, after setting off at 7am and travelling the entire length of the M4 we arrive! We'd just visited Whitchurch Hospital in Cardiff and Mountain Ash so we were pretty positive about this one. We walk in to find cars just casually driving past as if there's not an abandoned building right there? I mean, who wouldn't want to go inside? o_O I guess we're a strange bunch of people - nevertheless!

We walk up to the first building with some really long grass in front of it and we hear a van in the distance so we made haste and as the van just pops it's head out we hit the deck instantly inside the grass! Comedy moment. How he didn't manage to see us I don't know!

Anyway, we get up look around, loads of signs about CCTV and camera's everywhere, we just thought; Fuck it. Let's do this. We get into one building and hear some voices. Hit the deck! Again! But this time on a soaking wet, moss ridden carpet. This is becoming a recurring theme...:banghead It turns out it was just some teens walking about inhaling the wonders of asbestos. They soon left and then we followed shortly afterwards, about to go into another building and we hear another van. We tried to hide but it was too late!

"OI YOU F*CKING C*NTS GET THE F*CK OUT OF THERE"

    - Nice to meet you too, sir.

And off we went. If you do spy a small white van with an angry welshman inside: :slap

I love love love places like this, the peeling wallpaper and nature taking over is exactly what I look for in an explore :D.

Yeah as a heads up to anyone considering this one; it is a bit of a ball-ache. All of the buildings bar two are sealed with planks of wood and industrial grade fencing has been installed to block off the routes through the majority of the site.
Then again if three teenage girls kitted up in short-shorts and converse shoes can navigate their way in and out without getting caught- it certainly shows that we're doing something wrong @G_EX ;)

I got caught during my visit here maybe 2 years ago (?) But luckily I'd seen the majority of the place and security were kind enough to give me a tour of Admin as it was the only building I hadn't done!

I can't believe people still fall for the CCTV cameras. They last worked about 2003

In all honesty they described my movements exactly when I was in a completely concealed area (aside from the obvious camera) so aside from the cameras working I've never figured out how else they'd have known exactly what I did!
