Mooregreen Hospital is located at West end Southampton. It was built in 1848 at a cost of 7 grand, the hospital was initially used as a Work house and employed around 300 paupers. It then became a Public Assistance Institution in 1920, this is like a workhouse basically, and finally in 1948 it was taken over as part of the Formation of the NHS and renamed Mooregreen hospital. It’s such a shame that this historic and beautiful building has descended into this state, seeing as it was one of the original NHS hospitals. All parts of the actual hospital shut in 2011. But I was lucky enough to see it on a rainy January day.

Along the main road it because immediately obvious we were by the enormous structure that was Mooregreen hospital as it stood out so much against the rest of the other buildings nearby. We parked just up the road from it even though we noticed one lad in his car parked in the old hospital carpark for a bit for some reason, I think he was going to the Countess Mountbatten House Hospice. Which is located behind the Hospital, this is a modern building and is still open.

We walked around the whole building and eventually found a way in. It was enormous, like a maze inside, it wasn’t in a brilliant state. But I’m not surprised as local youths seemingly enjoy getting in there regularly. I even read one article saying it has been used as a ‘Teen fight club’. The building in itself though was in good condition, I trusted all the stairs and the floors were fine. Considering its age it is in a fairly safe condition, exteriorly it looks good aside from the broken windows.

We had fun in the laundry side of the building there were a lot of old clothes and blankets lying about and we saw this as an opportunity to play dress up. Overall a good explore with no hiccups. After exploring the main hospital building we found a map to suggest of a separate mortuary building. Sadly it was not a mortuary we don’t think, It had been converted and was either accommodation or palliative care. There was one building that was fire damaged that was once the mortuary. Was careful not to go in one room upstairs where the fire had been below. Local wildlife had moved into the building, there were some extremely noisy butterflies. I would have taken pictures of them but I don’t like them very much.

Not a bad effort, you might want to look at getting a tripod going forward to keep the camera a bit more steady :thumb

A bit late to this thread, but I figured I'd contribute! I live very close to the hospital and went in 3 or 4 times late month. On my third try I picked up a map that the builders had left in the entrance hall (the site is going to be converted into flats and houses soon) and located the morgue. It's on the left-hand side of the main building, big blue double doors for vehicles, you can't miss it. You can get inside through a door round to the left, although it might be difficult to spot, its tucked away in a corner. We did take pictures, although they're taken on a phone so might be a bit dark.
