Having heard this had been pumped full of Foam-crete a few years back we never bothered checking it out.. Most of the mines and quarries in the Combe Down part of Bath have either collapsed or been Foam-creted due to the flakey nature of the sub strata. As part of the Monkton Prep School and its playing field sits directly on top of the Quarries, Foam-crete was used to stabilize the land.

I'm not sure whether the bat monitoring equipment belongs to the college or English Nature but a substantial sum has been spent building the access shaft and ladders and installing an incubator and monitoring station. Both Grey Gables & Mount Pleasant quarries play host all the major species of bats that inhabit the locale, during our short (4hrs) visit we spotted greater & lesser horseshoe bats, but the four Myotis species - Whiskered, Brandt's, Natterer's and Daubenton's bats are also rumoured to visit. Perhaps this is why all the expense?

I believe the steel and concrete tunnel is the divide betwix the two quarries, the latter half of the pics being Grey Gables.
