Just wondered if anyone has ever done any reports on any of the old caves in Nottingham? I was doing some work on a shop refit a few years ago and remember there being a little alley/path from the back yard to the street. Down it, there was a door with a rather inconspicuous sign saying 'entrance to Nottingham Caves. Few of us had a look round. Some interesting things down there including an old horse drawn plough. I think it was open as a tourist attraction at some point but was probably closed on the grounds of ye old health and safety. Some of the stairs and paths were a little dodge for the general public to use. Would be interested to see some pictures if it's still accessible.

Guess you mean Peel Street Caves / Rouse Sand Mine?

The Nottingham Cave Society got access and mapped it all out (Linky thing)

Both entrances seem to be sealed well with steel doors though.

Theres this from 2010 but as I say, the steel doors are solid.

...unless you mean one of the other 2 or 3??

The shop was called Cruise/Limeys. Was on the corner of Bridlesmith Gate/Low Pavement, with the entrance to the caves being down the side of the shop on Bridlesmith Gate.

I went down into the Bridlesmith Gate caves many years ago (on a tour). They're apparently still accessible by appointment with the Nottingham Historical and Archaeological Society. The relevant Nottingham Caves Survey micro-site is at http://nottinghamcavessurvey.org.uk/bh10/index.htm. The real prize is the Peel Street/Rouse's Mine complex, but as mstarmatt says, it seems to be pretty well sealed off, although there may well be access from one or two private premises along Mansfield Road. The aim is to open it up to the public again eventually.

Apologies for bringing this thread back from the dead... but I have sought and I believe I have found. Anyone around Nottingham interested in joining me? Don't really want to do this one alone.
