my first contribution.... the notorious Spike Island, Co. Cork, Ireland.
A recently abandoned Military Base built in the 17th century by the British Army. In the 18th & 19th century Spike Island was used as departure point for prisoners from the British Isles to Australia. Last use was a prison which only closed in 2003 after inmates rioted and a few buildings were burnt down.

Now Cork County Council are restoring the island and starting basic tours of the old army base. A fascinating place - my dad grew up here as his father was the base commander in the 1950's.
