Opal 3, which is also known as the Opal Tower, serves as a student accommodation block for 542 students in Leeds. It was designed by Morrison Design in 2005 and later constructed in 2007. By early in September 2008 it was finished, well within its expected completion date. Inside, the accommodation offers cluster flats for up to 6 students per block, a number of deluxe rooms which each have a double bed, and a small number of studio rooms located on the upper floors of the tower. In addition to this, a number of communal areas, a reception area and laundry facilities are situated on the ground floor. Opal 3 officially opened its doors to tenants on 15th September 2008 and it remains one of the most high demand and, allegedly, luxurious (by student standards) university accommodations available in Leeds City Centre. Although it was initially identified as being the second tallest building in Leeds, the development has since become the third highest building in the city, after Bridgewater Place and The Plaza Tower. Despite losing its former status, at an overall height of 90 metres (295ft), with 26 floors, it continues to dominate the city landscape and can be seen from many miles away.

Next on the cards was Leeds City Centre, to try our luck with a few rooftops and capture a few shots of the area by night. Not knowing Leeds particularly well we drove directly into the city; getting lost a couple of times on the crazy road system as we did, and aimed straight for the highest looking thing we could see. With no plan, and despite our empty stomachs, somehow we managed to wander inside and reach the top floor with relative ease. Jumping out onto the roof and seeing the vast horizon of lights after the long drive was quite a magical moment. High up in the middle of Leeds we could see for miles, and since there was hardly any breeze it wasn’t too chilly either!
