Pelhams Pillar is situated in Cabourne High Wood above Caistor, which is on the edge of the Brocklesbury Estate.
At 128 feet high it has stood for over 160 years.
It was built to commemorate the planting of 12,552,700 trees on the estate by Charles Anderson Pelham the first Earl of Yarborough.
The foundation stone was laid by his sonin 1840 and finished by his grandson in 1849.
There was no railway, so all the stone had to be delivered from Grimsby docks by road, no mean feat in those days.
The architect was Edward James Willson of Lincoln who was paid a fee of 100 guineas, the two lions were carved by W.D Keyworth who was paid £145 (eqv today of £12,400),one lion was sleeping and one awake so there was always one on guard.
The total cost of the build was £2400 which would today cost approx £177,000.
The view from the top is said to look out to all the land held by the estate, on completion of the building Prince Albert of Saxe-coburg & Goth the husband of Queen Victoria made a Royal Visit...
