I paid a visit to the Pickleman's Cottage a few weeks ago - or Petch House as it turns out to be called. It was one of a few things I'd seen this year that really made me want to visit, thanks in no small part to BassboyJoe's excellent report from a while back (cheers for the info mate - I parked half a mile away and the car was unscathed when I got back :D).

To be honest as I suspected, it had been pretty ransacked and much of what made it intriguing had gone. The kitchen roof has largely caved in and it's pretty ropey looking these days. I got a few shots and left but didn't bother posting a report.

This may be of interest to anyone that's been or anyone considering going however - the Borough Council have served a notice of intended works on the two current registered owners to prevent unauthorised entry and danger to public health. Come 1 September they will be taking steps to secure it and looking to recharge the owners.

If you're interested, get there while it's easy. Don't expect to see the infamous pickles though...

If they"d charged a Tenner off every visit it"s had off the various Forums they"d have been able to purchase a new roof and decent security fencing to boot :)

That"s the same type of Form they stuck on Garnetts Cabinet Works in Warrington.....made a difference for a while it seems :D

Good luck getting the funds off the owners....not worked for Denbigh Council yet :(

Was wondering why my old report on this place had changed it's title yet again!! Good find.

So when the kitchen caved in all the pickles got smashed? Or is it just that it's not possible to get in the kitchen now?

You can get in if you fancy scrambling around in shite! The ceiling is clinging on but hampering any kind of walk-in access. Not sure where the pickles were but a lot has disappeared as far as I could tell. I wish I'd seen it 6 months ago but still, I got a couple of nice shots :)

The pickles aren't in the kitchen :) when I visited in late June (parked half a mile away also) most were in their rightful place in the larder, though I did spot one in the bushes on my way out so some may have wandered. When I've sorted my photos out I may post a report...

Was the larder the room between the piano room and the kitchen, with the stairs to the TV loft next to an old dresser? If so the shelves were empty... Mind you things seem to move about a bit in there so they could reappear at any time!

Nope, they were under the stairs in the main part of the house, the doorway being between the foot of the stairs and the smaller living room which used to have the sewing machine and stereo in.

You may have peeked in and seen the plates and cooking utensils and thought no more of it, they were in an alcove down the far end of that room.

Thanks for the heads up, bit gutted but been too busy of late to get down there as there's always something else to do, guess that's life sometimes. Will make sure I get down there soon to see what is left of it. Shame it's gone into such a state but that's the nature of the hobby I suppose.

    Game over chaps!

Drove past this afternoon, saw a car in the driveway with a chap stood beside it having a drink, so pulled over and spoke with him.

He is the present owner, the house was his mothers. He lives a few doors down and had chased somebody out of there recently, he can see this house from his!

He is angry that the Council are on his back and that all the stuff inside has been pinched, like his mother's sewing machines. He was in the process of securing the door and windows, so it looks like game over.

If he lives a few doors down why TF didnt he fix the door before all of his Ma's stuff was pilfered, sounds odd for sure.

    I thought similar.

I got the impression he doesn't go into the house very often, and had only done so recently due to the Council notice going up. He seemed pretty gutted about the stuff going missing.

First reports I noticed go back to Sept/Oct last year, so the door hasn't been open for so long.

AND, why would you drive and park in an overgrown driveway covered in stuff that could easily damage your car when your own house is in spitting distance?!

Wonder who the American RAF serviceman was then that everyone thought was the owner...

If he only lived a few doors down he'd no doubt have easily noticed - whenever it got dark - that the lights inside were being turned/left on. The first time that happened he'd have known people had been in and secured things then.

Also, if he was that attached to the valuable items (sewing machines) that his mum used to own, why would he not have taken them when they were first abandoned?

Sure sounds to me like he was elaborating on any truth in his story, and he clearly lives further away than he was saying to try and scare people off with the worry the place is 'under constant watch'.

The electricity's still on?! FFS I wish I'd thought to try it - those dark rooms were a bastard to light with a torch!
