    History
Built in 1826/1829 for Lord Bagot; the family seemingly lost it all at the horse races. House was then leased to Sir Henry Tate (Tate & Lyle's sugar), and the rest of the land sold off for timber use. It was used in the 1930s as a convelescence home, with its capacity increased during the second world war. It became a Lunatic Asylum in 1949, where it was used to ease pressure on the nearby Denbigh Asylum. The capacity was 89 patients. This asylum close in 1939, shortly before Denbigh Asylum.

    The explore
We visited on a sunny August day, after a nice walk through the nearby footpaths and woods. We crossed the stream below the old bridge, and followed the old path up. This was my first asylum trip...so I was super excited! I only went up to the top of the stairs in the main building, as the floor felt a little squishy. We didn't find our way into the kitchen, as the internal door seemed to be holding up a large chunk of ceiling. We did see parts of the kitchen through windows when we ventured around the back of the building. We also ventured into the generator/water heating room which still smelled strongly of machine oil/lubricants.

More photos are on my Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/photos/obsidian_urbex/albums/72157656939049088). I tried not to overkill you guys with my over-enthusiastic photograph taking :)

    I hope you enjoy!

Did you check out the cellar? Plenty of bats down there

The cellar accessed from outside? This one was sealed up from what I could see, but didn't get close to check really due to overgrowth and some barbed wire.

If you face the main staircase and turn left through the dodgy door on the left its on your left. Open staircase goes down two flight to the left. One side splits off to the right. That room has the door you can see from outside. If you go the other way it stretches out a fair way under the hall. Full of interesting junk. You must have seen it in other reports?

no probes mate. Yeah we didn't venture up the last set of stairs as they we spongy as bell and we could see most of it through the rotten ceiling anyway. Shame to see such a grand building in such decline. Great report though dude [IMG]
