Visited with MarkyMark and Kinger - Ever since we first found out what was housed beneath the site on Portland we've wanted to gain access. Now nine years later after the MOD Patrols have stopped and the Guard Dog Trainers have moved on, the site is under private ownership as a horse stables. Entry is a bit of a mission, but well worth it!

A bit of history: The Portland Centimetric Early Warning Radar Station was constructed in 1950-51. Installations began on 1st December 1951 with Operational availability achieved by 20th February 1953.

Defence Estates maintain that the bunker was used by the US Army while it planned the D-Day landings, but historians have said that was impossible with regards to the build date! Someone is not telling the truth!?

ROTOR 1 (to call it by its code name) was heavily damaged by a fire nearly 20 years ago and subsequenty all the once beautiful mahogany floors have been removed.

There is a main corridor running the length of the bunker with several rooms coming off the sides. A kitchen and dining area, toilets and showers and a two storey planning room are just some of the features still in place. However the second storey is unaccessable due to the very unsafe stairs.

We believe these to be the only photos on the internet taken post-2001 after the site was opened for two open-days for auctioneers to show potential buyers.

The photo's we've taken really don't do this site justice. We'd be really happy for other explorers with superior camera skills to meet up and we'll kindly show you down...
