Portland Underground HQ and Communication Centre 15/09/08 - Report

As far as i know the only recent visitors to this place have been Subterranea, although i am open to correction!!

Anyway, Its quite a mission to get down to, and if you pick a night when a ship is taking on fuel oil bunkers, it'll be busy with pick-ups running around! We had several encounters with bushes and hiding in old guard houses! But we got there in the end!

The tunnels and rooms are well preserved, although there is alot of standing water in places (wellies a must!). There isn't much left in the actual rooms, but it is a fair size down there, and with four separate entrances there's enough to explore to warrant the trip down the hill!

Heres the pics, apologies for the poor quality, but this was a first visit and without a tripod!

Most of the rooms are constructed from breeze block, actually in the round tunnels:

Tunnels and passages go off left right and center:

    About the only "item" left:

    The "office" lettering system:

Nice, first time I have seen this. What was it used for, guarding the dock?

Nice one guys i did not know this was on the port. One day last summer i walked from the old rifle range and walked through the port and out the gate. Security in the gate house just put his hand up to me. I went in the top by the cemetery one night to have a look at the east weare battery too. Portland is ace i would like to explore the Verne but i think the prison service still use it.

Yeah! Portland is excellent! I think there are lots of other underground site's that people have forgotten about, we've got a few "irons in the fire" it's just a case of getting the locals to tell us what they know!

As for the Verne, it is still an active prison, but thats all in slightly more modern buildings. Not really sure what all the old perimeter tunnels are used for! They don't look used, if your ever up around the Verne, you can see through all the old rusty grates from the other side of the moat.
