The site of the Savoy Buildings was protected from development until the early 20th century, because it stood in front of a row of coastguard cottages which needed a clear line of sight to the sea.

The Savoy Buildings were built in 1929 as a ballroom and in the 1970s it became the nightclub Nero's, then Fifth Avenue, and latterly Time and Envy, Zoom and Joanna’s next door

The development will see the site razed and rebuilt as 92 flats. Savoy Court, the adjoining building on its eastern flank, is to be kept intact and converted to flats.

Demolition involves around eight men, and it is expected to take around 10 weeks to clear the site.

Robbie K and I found access relatively simple considering the amount of time and money that has clearly been spent to keep the druggies and the vandals out. We pretty much squeezed through and were able to freely roam for 4 hours. We took hundreds of photos and explored everything from the roofs to the cellars, apartments, and Joanna’s nightclub, finally the management/office areas. In this area there were some hilarious Polaroid’s of a clubber and a large stripper in the late 70's or early 80's. Extenisve confidential papers, some massive 528MB backup tapes, bills, staff details, safes, computer equipment etc.

The apartments are a healthy size and great views of the ocean and across to the IOW. There is a lot of remenance of the residents, clothing, shoes, TV's and such like. All in all a memorable and relaxed explore with nice big apartments.

If you’re going to explore this location, wear latex gloves or similar, pigeon crap everywhere.
