I have notices a site of interest near penistone and was just wondering if anyone knows what it is. From the outside it looks like an old fuel storage facility. It looks like there are three very large underground storage structures. There are some above ground structures that are borded up and i think this place has been closed for a long time. I am thinking of doing this as the access looks easy as it is very remote apart from a few farms.

I have searched on the web for hours and cant find any traces of this site.

I realy want to get underground here.

Well beaware it used to be a storage facility for petrol, I used to go there years ago for a company I worked for, we supplied intrinsic safe lighting etc. They used to empty the tanks and clean the slurry from the bottom of the tank. No doubt the fumes and gases will still be there. DO Not go in here without breathing apparatus and intrinsically safe lighting or its curtains for you and blow half of Penistone up. Really not a good idea as each of these underground tanks are half the size of a football pitch and the above control rooms may be boarded up, but im sure these tanks are still in use. Their conected to the port at liverpool and pump direct. The internet show companies still advertising to store, oil, fuel etc. I will listen for the Bang!

Local vandals used to love nicking the "t" from the sign on the local Leisure Centre.

yea im thinking of leaving this one well alone purely down to the fact its used by the MOD. Im only 20mins away and i have all the intrinsically safe equip s i work for a gas company but i think getting cought on an active mod site is a little too riskt for this urban explorer!!

The fuel store use to be run by Conoco as a tanker depot covering up its real use by the MOD, have a look on secret bases its listed on there as a fuel depot. Its all painted green as expected! and has vast fuel storage bunkers covered by earth. It can be accessed by....shouldnt say but ...Choo!...Choo! is a clue. The site has been left derelict for some years and I dont know of any security on site. Leave the A629 at its fork as it comes out of Thurgoland and drops down to Oxspring, as you drop down the hill look to your left and you will see what you are looking for. It was connected to the vast MOD pipeline and conoco used it as a transfer depot. I believe at some point the river Don was contaminated by oil from this place many years ago killing a large amount of fish. Anything else message me for more details! Personally the air shaft up at the woodhead tunnel looks more interesting to look down if anyone has a collapsible, extendable ladder! If you have the balls to stand on the iron grid directly above the drop and let the sun come overhead, fuck me! its a rush.

Not particualy a secert! but thats my take on it as well, that the depot was placed on 'care & maintance' and very little has been carried out in recient years. The GPSS link was capped, and the pipe to the nearest hub still in place, so the Govenment (read MoD) could have it running in days as a tanker depot, and probably in a week or so for the storage tanks.

The main GPSS pipeline is still in use as far as RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire, passing on its way a few hubs one feeding Robin Hood Airport (former RAF Finningley)

Those wanting maps - Read the whole thread & links. A blind man can find it....
