    History -
Built in 1849 as "Meerenberg Bloemendaal" (renamed Provincial Hospital Santpoort in 1918) it was the Netherlands first and up until 1884 only psychiatric hospital in the Netherlands. Originally the hospital housed 250 patients and was gradually enlarged over the years until the 1930s when patient numbers had grown to 1500.
Much like the Asylums in England, patients were seperated by male and female wards and were also split into social class and diagnosis.
In 1971 it was decided that patients would be transferred to smaller Psychiatric units in Amsterdam and the hospital was gradually closed until the last patient left in 2002.

I visited here with my Dutch friend who lived not far from the site. There were numerous workmen on site at the time as some of the buildings were being demolished (land is very expensive in the Netherlands due to the lack of it and thus it's really surprising that the hospital sat derelict for as long as it did). Needless to say we weren't spotted and spent a good few hours inside marvelling at just how ridiculously big everything was in comparison to our hospitals.

I had a shit camera at the time so I apologise for the pictures. Sigh.
