This quarry I visited on my way from Nuremberg to Paris by car, good place for a break.
Found it by accident when a asking for the local stone in the tourist office of Commercy.
Visited it both ways and on the way home I gave me two nights of stay at that nice place.
Parts of it are still in use as a open quarry, some are abandoned, with official tourist walkway (just signs) and a school
or education center or something like that in it, a large public open quarry and some fenced underground/mountain quarries.
A pretty nice place also if not going inside.
Where you can park your car there are some houses left of a former quarry seddlement,
where once 6oo people lived, a wash house, houses with a closed bar and some ruins.
One man or so is still living there, former stonemason. Friendly guy, he and a work comrade invited me for a few glasses of Ricard in one of the houses.
Could find not much infos on the history, work must have stopped at different times there, with different number of workers,
some breaking stone, others doing further and even art works, as ordered. 5 guys seem to do all the work now.
Also heared about WW2 oxygene production (for V2) by the Germans, but could not find further informations.
I found some thick concrete construction in there, might have been this,
also read about electric power production by the Nazis, waterpowered, using the nearby source.
Ok, that's all I can say, even asked in the town hall, but could not get better infos.

the public abandoned quarry, nice, with an interesting huge layer all over the place, deformed and broken by undersea earthquakes, I believe, in it's early years.
interesting also how plants and trees start to conquer that space, but I hope they cut the trees off, as you can not see this often.
in the middle that seems to be what's left of the extracted layer.

left pic: two small tunnels there, one short and blocked, seemed to have been the way to the other side of the quarry, the other leading in a hall through the concrete chamber

That's a really great report, can't wait to go there myself.

Picture 4 is a Citroen DS, one of the best looking cars ever built.

Thanks for your friendly comments and...

...to Mr.kwan to give me that warning.
The problem is, they were part of the first set, but I had too much pictures in my post (35 allowed) and I had to take them out of the report in the last second.
I wanted so much pics, to make it not only a nice photo post, but also informative, a bit a documentary for others to see what that place is like.
To make it not so large I put some small in a row, but the number of photos is restricted.
Would have liked to show them all in big size.

I've prefixed this as archived so it doesn't get processed automatically.

TF, you can show all your images full size, the restriction is on the number of images, not the size of the report.
