    RAF Coleby Grange - Lincolnshire - June - 2007

We decided to go to RAF Coleby Grange just off the A15 Sleaford Road. The sight apparentally is haunted. Every May, the ghost of a guilt ridden R.A.F Officer is supposed to stop to return to haunt the site of the former R.A.F Base at Coleby Grange, just south of Lincoln. The legend says that in the life the officer tormented himself over the number of young men he had sent on air raids, who has consequently been killed - one of whom has been his best friend. This mournful figure has been observed looking sadly from the top floor of the old control tower, his gaze taking in the over grown runway. Mysterious footsteps have also been heard in the top corridor. We took the trip in the daylight and everything was as it should be. It's a small site worth a visit if you are passing.

    Brief History
Work on constructing this WW2 airfield was begun in 1938. During the war it was, in turn, home to a number of RAF squadrons including Polish and Canadian ones.
Possibly its most notable part of the war was having the 425 Sqn US 9th Air Force deployed there for the D-Day landings and subsequent battle to gain a foothold in Europe.
It had 3 grass runways and was predominently used by fighter groups. By the end of the war there was 7 hangers and a whole host of buildings surrounding the perimeter track which still survives today.
After the war the airfield was closed ,only to be re-opened in 1958 not as an airfield as such but as a base for the deployment of Thor Nuclear missiles
It was decommisioned in 1963 after the Cuban missile crisis.

The classic design of control tower is also still present.

Here are some pictures of the site.

You seem to be slowly ticking all of the local explores off the list.

    Good report :thumb

Thanks Matt & Hamagger for your comments and the thumbs up, I've had the pictures on the hard drive for ages, just forgot about them. I would love to do more explores, its getting someone who wants to come to these places with me when I want to go can be difficult. A small group is always good. You just never know who or what will will be there. Thers so much out there, its just getting the time to see it.

I hope the toilet venture is paying off, I do not have any mind blowing pics to post yet, most are smashed up or broken.

Thers a couple of places I would like to go to. St Johns and The Bass Maltings, after reading some reports on here with security being there all the time makes it a bit of a bummer. You have done well Hamtagger to get those pics in of those sites.
