It's been a few years since anyone has posted a report of this site that wasn't just the crumbling accomidation blocks, so I'll skip these as there's nothing new to show.

This was a two part visit, once on a cold windy day (visited with fellow member 4lex) and the other a baking hot sunny day when I went back to get some better pictures and explore the bomb dumps.

Local Fact: Apart from being a former RAF Base the airport is known for the mountain of rubber which has blighted Norfolk's landscape for a decade. Lovely.

First a bit of the history of the site...

When driving up to the new industrial area I was happy to see that the original guard house still survived, this trip was looking promising.

After the gates is Sculthorpe Boulevard, which at one time would have been the main road around in and out of the base but are now awful pothole ridden unmaintained roads. At the end of this is main gate and maintenance gate to the airstrip, now either blocked or chained up as they lead the the airstrip are which is still in MoD hands.

A few minutes later we were standing outside the Tower, it's a big beast and must have been seen a lot of planes in during its operational years.

The Yanks have certainly been here as there are dual US/UK sockets throught the site.

The tower has been pretty much stripped out of anything military related, there are only a few clues as the the uses of the old rooms.

The only equipment remaining from its glory years is in the Relay Room and the Radio Room, but even then the pikeys have been in here.

Up to the top we go! I was a little disappointed to see it was empty having previously seen picture of it with some gear still in place. Still the view is quite something and gives you an idea of how big the base was!

The emergency vehicle garages (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wORz33bBix8) were next to the tower so it'd have been rude not to have a look...

The local residents didn't seem to mind us looking around luckily :)

Runway 06-24 is truely massive and took me 25 minutes to walk from end to end, with a few photos. The actual tarmac section of the runway is 9000ft (and is maintained as it's in MoD use still) but there are also two concrete section run-off areas at both ends making the total length closer to 11,000ft so it is even longer in reality! Weirdly enough the runway lights were intact one side and destroyed the other...
