RAF Stenigot Chain Home Radar Station. May - 2014 - Stenigot - Lincolnshire
I have always seen the Stenigot dishes from a distance and never really botherd to go there until myself and a friend decided to go out on a motorcycle excusion. We ended up at RAF Stenigot in the middle of literally nowhere. The views over the wolds are fantastic when you get the right lighting. On first impression when you visit the site, the parabloic dishes look like something out of a Si-Fi movie they are massive and quite over whelming and really good to photograph, my friend was standing underneath 1 of the dishes in the photographs to give an idea of scale. the weather was mixed, unsettled with good strong lighting and softer over cast lighting. There is the transmitter block to the right of the dishes, a small walk will take you there, and there is the chain radar mast that has been left for MOD traning purposes. We wore our high vis jackets there which look like official personel on the site. 1 part of the site belongs to the Stenigot estate and the other part with the transmission block belongs to the MOD. The site is over looked by a private house which is near the tall radar mast. We had the place to ourselves. The reciever block which is near to the dishes has been demolished by the Stenigot estate, a shame really as it was a part of our history which has gone for ever. I have noticed a rubble heap in some of my images in the distance, I can only assume its the former site of the Reciever Block. I plan to go back there and produce some more detailed shots, especially the radar mast.

    Some Brief History
RAF Stenigot was opened in 1940 as an east coast Chain Home radar station.
Stenigot provided long range early warning for raids from Luftflotte V and the northern elements of Luftflotte II along the approaches to Sheffield and Nottingham and the central midlands. RAF Stenigot was part of a vital early warning system during World War II. The giant 60ft dishes helped RAF intercept Nazi bombing raids. The site in Lincolnshire was a vital NATO communications link during Cold War.

Thanks Kwan for your comments. I'm leaning fast. Just hard deciding which pics out of 250 to post. The bunker was interesting, you just have to watch where you tred.

    Nicely covered there :thumb

I got lost looking for this a few years back in the pouring rain but ended up driving into the fields and parking right by them. Must try and get back there on a sunny day...

Thanks to Kwan, Idle Hands, Hamtagger & Faido for your comments. I need more mates to visit more places lol, problem with going solo if any unexpected event might happen. I've been ok to date I always go with someone when they are free, you just never know. I plan to up there sometime and produce a more detailed study of the bunker, and radar mast after I have finished other projects.

Like the last dish shot a lot. Missed the building on my visit so a good excuse for a return visit to this rather unique place!
