Sacriston Colliery's working life of nearly 150 years, from 1839 to 1985
It was one of the last inland collieries in County Durham to close, having survived as long as it did because of the presence of some high quality coking coals, but in difficult to work seams.

This place has been almost totally destroyed, by arson and redevelopment,
the only remaining buildings have been used as a dumping ground

the huge spoil heaps have been removed, and the area is now Chester-le-Street Councils Yard
