Myself and 12318 had this place on the list for a while but just needed to find a day where we were both free and in the same area to do it.
A scratch day off work on Friday provided the ideal excuse so we decided to have a go. I've been on a umber of explores big and small but this one caused the most trepidation, mainly due the reports of security, big fences and lots of construction work on site.

    Severalls didn't disappoint.

It took us a good hour of searching and planning before working out a plan to get in. Security seems very hot on making sure previous entry points are closed and then made doubly secure. If I ever really want to protect something, I'm going to get a lot of palisade fencing and some razor wire! They really don't want people in the site.

Opened in 1913 Severalls once housed up to 2000 patients (inmates?) and was constructed in such a way as to allow staff to move around the entire 300 acre site without having to go outside. A network of long corridors links the main building.

The site was sold in 2007 for redevelopment but the crash of 2008 saw the sale fall through and as yet a buyer has not been found for the whole site. Building work has started on an area used as the hospital farm which included the demolition of a couple of remote 'Villas' used by the hospital. The main hall has been demolished after a fire in 2007 and it seems the building is under constant attack from vandals and arsonists as can be seen in some of the pictures below.

I guess the message is probably see it while you can.

My pics were taken on a Nikon D5100 with a standard Nikon 18-55mm VR lens. Hope you like them.

Is a visit here complete without going to the morgue?

We got to the bottom of the water tower but it really is locked down pretty tight, and since we were tired, still had to work out how to get back out and thee was no obvious way in we gave it a miss. Had to make do with some external pictures:

I took just over 150 frames on the day, and I think we only explored around 40% of the buildings and that took 5.5 hours. Its a great explore but getting in really is quite challenging. Good fun though.

    Thanks for looking.
