The construction of the Severn Railway Tunnel in Lydney was completed in 1878; one year before the corresponding Severn Railway Bridge was finished.
It was used by trains to avoid a large hill which is situated on top of the tunnel, however the line was abruptly closed following the collision between the bridge and two oil barges. This effectively caused parts of the bridge to collapse, closing the line forever, as it was never repaired.
The tunnel is now used by nearby farmers to transport themselves from field to field without climbing the large hill.

PS: Sorry for the not-great quality of pictures in this report. The lighting, for some reason, wasn't great there, so these are the best shots I could have gotten with what I had.

Above this Underpass used to stand the Severn Bridge Station. The photograph underneath was taken on the 24th May 1964.

Sorry for causing so much trouble! I'll try and get the photos back up very soon, plus if you're wondering why they're missing, I actually deleted them from my Flickr account without remembering that I'd linked the two together. I hope to have some photos back up within the upcoming days!

    Hi mate,

The tunnel, at its shortest walk, is only around 5-10 minutes away from the nearest road/lane. Your best bet is to park up on the side and make your way along the public footpath, and then across a relatively small field.

The grid reference for the 'parking space', let's say, is SO6688104554, and from there just make your way to the tunnel! (Grid Reference: SO6646104210)

If you want anymore info, let me know!

This is where the Severn Railway Bridge Station would've stood, above this underpass.
