Silverlands: Growing Up at the Actors' Orphanage"
    By Judy Staber
    Prologue

Imagine being just shy of four years old and left on the doorstep of a house bigger than any you had ever seen before: a giant’s house! an ogre’s castle!

My earliest memory of Silverlands, the Actors’ Orphanage, is arriving in a black taxi from Chertsey Station in Surrey with my sister Susannah, then aged seven, and being handed over to a forbidding man called Commander Aggitter on that doorstep by our actress mother, Joan White. I can recall no tears shed, no hugs or kisses goodbye, just the feeling of being dwarfed by the huge front entryway, the high ceilings and the very large people. Perhaps there’s a remembered whiff of Je Reviens perfume as our mother walked down the six stone steps and into the waiting taxi without a backward glance.

History: Nestled on the outskirts of the M25 in Chertsey lays a Grade II listed manor house with a potted history of uses. Originally built in the early 19th century by the Brewer Robert Porter, it was then went through multiple ownerships until it became the Actors Orphanage in 1938. The Actors Orphanage had previously started in Croydon in 1912 and in 1915 found residence in Langley Hall in Berkshire before finally moving to Chertsey in 1938. During World War II, the children were evacuated New York and the building was utilised as a Nurse’s School for the nearby Botley’s Park Hospital, now St Peters Hospital. After the war the building was part run as the nurse’s school and the orphanage; in 1958 it was decided to close the orphanage as the cost of upkeep became too high. It continued as the nurse’s school until the late 1990’s (as for the 90's onwards you can look into that part of its history because I feel it inappropriate)

    Report:
It felt very strange visiting here; knowing once upon a time it was an orphanage. I felt being in there how scary it must have once been for the little'luns having there parents; leave them at the wayside and like Judy said in her book of which there is a snippet above her mumma didn't even turn around; just got in the taxi and left her and her sister.

Felt very alone in there it must have been somewhat the same emotion felt throughout the place in its hay-day. Actors Orphanage or not. Them little faces would have been broken hearted.

That aside heres the pictures hope you all enjoy! it was great being in the main reception area with the stairs, fireplaces and such but soon as my fellow splorers left the room and left me in it I got the creepers :D

I have to say it was emotional, what an experience.

Wow great report! Love this as it's got that personal element. Bet it was bitter sweet going there. What a grand place it must have been though, with all the paneling! The shot of lift and light coming through the window is my favourite :thumb

Thanks folks; yes very bitter sweet, felt lost like the little ones :/

The place was very awe-inspiring but had somewhat a sadness about the place in some parts. I have to say the fireplace for some reason grabs my attention, the lift and this beauty :)

Surprised to see this pop up again actually with the security guys posting on here so much about it.. does seem like they've attempted to seal it with all those boards!! Does the electric still work?? :)

Apparently some lad badly hurt himself climbing over the fence and the security guy posted a thread on here about saying they were now sealing it completely to stop it happening again... I seem to remember him also saying that they were starting to redevelop it months ago as well which clearly hasn't happened :)

If one can't consider other safer roots then they don't deserve to be in the community tbh, amirite :p

Not sure what you mean by this mate? I don't want any details for it and haven't asked for any. I've been there before....
