I had always wanted to see Snowdown, although small in comparison to some of its northern rivals, it is now one of the few remains of the Kent Coal Industry.

When I had driven past the site previously, security vans regularly patrolled around the buildings...when I visited this time I saw no sign and I had the site to myself.

The Colliery closed in 1987 in line with other National pit closures. Mining begun on the site in 1907, making Snowdown the oldest commercial colliery in Kent.

I found two capped shafts, Number one was 83m deep and shaft number two was 940m deep. I believe there was another shaft however I did not find this on my visit.

In 1988 the shafts were capped and the headgear removed, the building were also stripped and secured.

An interesting visit despite the bare buildings which remain.
