This is an amazing building from the outside and in great location overlooking the coast and as a kid i always wondered what it was like inside.

All the features have nearly been stripped from the place and metal thieves have done their job well. Its a shame as this building has so much history for the area.

    Some History

Southerndown Care Home was built in the 1890 and was originally known as “The Dunraven Hotel”. This was demolished in 1890 to cater for a higher class of visitor, running a horse brake service to and from Southerndown Road Station at Castle-upon-Alun.

Since the 1940’s it has been occupied as a convalescence and care home for the blind. The building was constructed in the style of a castle with accommodation on three floors with attic accommodation above.

On 5th June 1948 the Wales Council for the blind opened the premises as Southerndown Care Home for the Blind and Elderly, originally offering holidays for people with visual impairment.

Southerndown Care Home was a registered charity with any profits being used to improve and upgrade the facilities. Closed around 2009

Hi, can you explain to me how you got access to the building and if you took any measurements etc. I am a design student looking to use this building for my final project. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Put it this way "It WAS tight" it was also a year ago and was due for demolition but has been reprieved and now back on the market. Its also been well and truly sealed with even the walk in entrance to the site being blocked off.

Cheers, unfortunately the inside is nothing like it used to be back in the day, totally stripped.
