The original hospital mortuary was built in 1940 during the secound World War. In 2007 a decision was made to close it by St. Peters Hospital as the building was past it, the roof was rotten and leaking and it was straining to keep up with demand, and a new £4.89m mortuary development was started. In 2009 the old mortuary was closed and the new one opened.

I went to check it out a few months ago...

This was a brilliant local explore for me, and many thanks to MarkR for making it a possibility and OT for making me aware that it was there!
It was also a real buzz, what with PIRs beeping and cameras rolling, and not forgetting the CCTV camera outside that was aimed directly at the front door. We wasted no time getting in and getting some photos, half expecting hospital staff or security to stroll in at any given moment! Just what is it with derelict mortuaries and blatant front door access (think harold wood and this) :crazy
