Stanley dates back to 1843 when Frederick Stanley set up a shop in New Britain, Connecticut to produce bolts, hinges and other hardware from wrought iron.

His cousin, Henry set up the Stanley Rule and Level Company in 1857 and both merged in 1920. The company entered the UK market with the acquisition of Sheffield based JA Chapman in 1937.

The company merged with Black and Decker in 2010.

I'm unsure of the full history of Stanley's Woodside Works, or whether it had anything to do with Stanley's predecessor in Steel City. Architecturally the building dates back to the 1930s, with a 1960s building added on.

Me and James had a look at this the other week however was put off by the presence of some shifty looking characters. This week we went for it with little hassle and spent a few hours wandering about the place.
